A year of vision and sound: Extramusic’s 50 best progressive rock & metal albums of 2025

The Extramusic editorial team presents its selection of the 50 best progressive rock and metal albums of 2025: a broad, boundary-free sonic map that spans generations, styles, and artistic visions, all united by the same idea of music as exploration, depth, and expressive freedom.

At the top of the list, legendary names coexist with leading figures of the contemporary scene. Albums such as Parasomnia by Dream Theater, The Overview by Steven Wilson, and Curious Ruminant by Jethro Tull show how progressive music can still reinvent itself without denying its identity. Alongside them are ambitious and visionary works by IQ, Amorphis, Gazpacho, and Coheed and Cambria, all capable of blending immediacy with rich musical layering.

The list also highlights the more experimental and metal-oriented side of the genre, featuring powerful and refined releases by Between the Buried and Me, Imperial Triumphant, Jinjer, and Rivers of Nihil, without overlooking the new voices that are redefining the genre’s boundaries.

Special attention has also been given to the European and independent progressive scene, where projects such as Primaluce with Dark Mirrors stand out, alongside names like Lunatic Soul, Bjørn Riis, Cosmograf, Kwoon, and many others—confirming a vibrant, international scene in constant evolution.

This Top 50 is not meant to be a definitive ranking, but rather a passionate snapshot of 2025: a year in which progressive rock and metal once again proved to be living languages, able to speak to the present while remaining deeply connected to their history. A list to explore, listen to, and debate—one album at a time.
